Somebody asked me, recently, "What's it like to be a dad?"

The parents out there will be nodding. They have been asked this question, or the "mum" version of it. And it is a difficult question to answer. If other parents are around you look at them with a half quizzical "How do you answer that?" look on your face. You get a silent face shrug, or some other parental "How the hell do I know?" look in response, turn back to the person asking the question, and say: "I can't describe it. You have to be one to know." One thing I learned today though, is that one piece of being a parent is coming to an understanding of what your own parents went through, raising you. The decisions they had to make, the sacrifices (some big, most of them not so) made, the hard calls, and the easy ones. And maybe, sometimes, they did something to their own detriment to make sure that you got something that made you happy. It has been an outstanding day, but it is the last time I am spending the day at an amusement park when I am only at about 70% of my usual fitness level. Definitely. Maybe. Well, until I remember how happy everybody has been today, and what a fan-fucking-tastic day it has been. That's all for now - I need some rest.
